India has the distinction of being the world's largest consumer of gold. In spite of the unique position, the Indian consumers till recently had no idea of the purity of the gold they purchased. During the survey conducted by Govt. of India, it was found that eight out of ten cases of Gold been sold as 22 carat were less than the declared purity. Precisely to address this issue the hallmarking scheme was launched in the year 2000 by Govt. of India, which is regulated by the Bureau of Indian Standards, to ensure protection of the consumers interest in the purchase of Gold Jewellery.

The scheme envisages jewellers to obtain license to mark these products with the Gold Hallmark. It would be the responsibility of the jeweller to get the gold jewellery assayed for purity at a laboratory (Hallmarking Center) who would check the purity and mark the items with the Hallmark. While the authorities are making efforts to make this scheme popular all over India, thanks to the wide spread publicity given through advertisements, there have been notable successes only in those places where the hallmarking centers are available.
